Pull Up assistance bands can make all the difference in a beginner’s progress in calisthenics training. Far better than kipping pull ups or even decline reps, bands allow you to practice the full range of motion in a given exercise. By using both a heavy and a light band within a workout, you can increase resistance and develop strength quickly. On top of all that, resistance bands are easy to use and generally long lasting and durable if used correctly.
The WOD Nation Pull Up Assistance Bands are Amazon’s choice in assistance bands. Let’s see if they’re worth the money, and worthy of a place in the arsenal of someone training in calisthenics.
The Good:
I purchased the green band, intended for those unable to do more than four pull ups and found it thick, well-made, and best of all, long enough to be used in a variety of ways during training. I could put a knee in, or a foot as I did pull-ups—often these bands are so short that you’re limited in what you can do. On top of that, the band is around ⅛” thick, making it strong and unlikely to tear or wear out.
I don’t recommend using the band barefoot, as it’ll pull at the skin of your feet. However that’s not a mark againt the bands themselves. They’re strong and well made, and provided excellent assistance on my pull ups. The band also preformed well when used for dynamic stretching.
The Bad:
The presentation on Amazon might make you think you’re getting a set of bands, when in fact one purchase=one band only. Also, I recommend paying close attention the chart before you choose your band, or even try out some at the gym to determine what level of assistance you want. It’d also be smart to purchase more than one around your assistance level, so you have one once you develop more strength.
Recommended?
This is the most robust assistance band I’ve yet used, and I don’t expect it to wear out soon. If you’re looking for an assistance band to help you with your pull-ups or stretches, the WOD Nation is a great option.
