How To Hang A Punching Bag From The Ceiling – Quick and Easy Installation

How To Hang A Punching Bag From The Ceiling – Quick and Easy Installation

Training is a vital part of all exercise regimes and sports.

No matter what field or discipline you are in, no matter what level you are performing at, for personal reasons, amateur, semi-professional, or full professional, training is needed to get you to the skill level that you want or need to be at.

Of course, training also, more often than not, requires equipment to be done right.

And more often than not, this can result in either incredibly expensive equipment that is brought into the home, or spending money on a gym membership that just eats away at your bank account.

That is what we hope to help you avoid with this article.

We are going to explain what exactly you are going to need to do to install and hang a punching bag from your ceiling. We’re also going to talk about the benefits of it.

The Right Equipment For Practice

However, if you are practicing a sport that includes a lot of strikes, such as punches, elbows, knees, and kicks, then there is only one piece of equipment you need: A punching bag.

And not only is getting one for yourself potentially a better financial option than spending money on a gym membership that you will only use one equipment set on, but it can be surprisingly hard to find gyms that have punching bags in some places.

However, once you have bought a punching bag for training, you are then faced with another issue.

One that is somewhat more difficult to answer, and with far worse consequences if you do it wrong: How exactly are you going to hang it up in your home?

After all, a badly installed punching bag is a destroyed ceiling and a massive dent in your financial situation if you do it wrong, so you need to get it right.

Why You Should Install A Punching Bag In Your Home

There are many benefits that you can get from having your punching bag in your home, as opposed to using one at a gym.

Well, as we already mentioned previously, having your punching bag will likely save you a lot of money in the long run, especially if you find that practicing at the gym is more of a hassle than doing it at home.

Not only that, but you may likely find that the results of practicing with a punching bag will be more noticeable more quickly.

With a punching bag being literally in the comfort of your own home, you will likely be much more inclined to take breaks and practice on the punching bag, even if those workouts are short and sporadic even.

As to what those benefits are, it should come as no surprise that using a punching bag for your punch and strike exercise will benefit your upper body strength, speed, and power greatly.

This is especially true if you primarily are practicing boxing.

Not only that but because good punches require movement from your whole body, as well as if you are practicing kicks, you will find that using a punching bag is an incredible way to work out your entire body (Find out how to do a one inch punch here).

You may also find that your hand-eye coordination and accuracy increase, too, as you get more practice in landing solid punches on a tangible target.

So, we have gone on in detail about what is so great about punching bags, now comes the section you clicked for, and have maybe even been nervous starting: How to hang these punching bags from your ceiling!

Know Your Bag’s Weight

The first thing you should do is check how much exactly your punching bag weighs. This is for a few reasons.

For one, you’ll need to know how much weight both the ceiling and the hook that you are hanging the punching bag from can take.

But it is also so that you can figure out what type of punching bag you have.

Most punching bags tend to clock at around 70 to 100 pounds, which is pretty good for a home bag.

However, a punching bag can be put under even more force if it is being used, which can have the effect of potentially doubling the weight your ceiling has to take.

Find The Right Ceiling Joist

The most common way of installing a punching bag is with a ceiling joist, as that is the part of your ceiling that supports it, and can often hold the most weight.

You should be able to find the joist in your ceiling by using a stud finder. The best way to find it is by starting to look for it at 16 inches from your wall, then at 24.

Once you have found the rough area, you can then either find the center yourself using a nail or hire a contractor to get it done to a professional standard.

Attaching The Hardware For Your Bag

This will require a few tools, including:

  • A power drill

  • An eye bolt

  • Wrench

  • An S-Hook

  • Bag and Chains

  1. To start, drill a hole in the ceiling joist that you found.

  2. Once you have made your hole, you can then twist the eye bolt that you have into the hole. Once it is in, make sure you finish tightening it with a sturdy wrench. Connect your chains and bag, then make sure that the chains are attached to the S-Hook.

  3. With the bag, chains, and S-Hook attached, you can now hang the S-Hook from the eye bolt. Make sure you have another person there to help.

  4. Test with a few punches, and you’re good to go!

Final Thoughts

So, as you can see, hanging a punching bag up, whilst a little tricky when finding the joist, is surprisingly simple to do, especially with some help!
