There are a lot of different reasons why someone may want to take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Some people are genuinely interested in this combat sport, others want to learn it as a form of self defense, others try it out just for fun! 


However, there’s always a lot of confusion as to how often you should attend classes for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Is once a week enough, or three times a week, or is training every single day necessary?

Two sessions a week is a great way to keep your body in shape, try out something new, and also exercise your mind and body without sacrificing other commitments like work, school, or your social life. 


However, if you want to really succeed at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, additional training will be recommended. 

 

Three Classes A Week

This is known as the ?sweet spot’ for martial arts training as it’s agreed that those who attend three Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes a week will be able to keep on top of their progress by practicing and drilling their footwork and form.


This means that you can quickly rise through the ranks of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and maintain a good, consistent performance without tiring yourself out.

Four Classes A Week

This allows you to go through every detail of your form with your instructor rather than just train at home, and you get to spar with other students to try out new moves and forms. 


This may sound really challenging but your body will adapt to the constant exercise and make you seriously strong and flexible, which is ideal for all competitive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters! 


Five Classes A Week And More

This kind of intense training routine should only be approached by those who are competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on a professional level.


The reason behind this is because at this point, you will be putting yourself at serious risk of burning yourself out. 


You need recovery days to rest your muscles and joints so you can prevent injuries and other kinds of damage. 


So, if you are just starting out with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it’s seriously not recommended that you try to dive straight into the deep end.


Build your way up slowly and if you are really committed and love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, then perhaps you can try out the five classes a week routine. 


Most instructors will advise you to stick with three (or four if you are serious and want to compete in tournaments) as trying to push yourself too far could end up ruining your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu career. 


So, it’s not recommended that you train as much as five times a week. Remember, breaks are important too!
