How Much Are Jiu-Jitsu Classes? (Price Guide)

Jiu-Jitsu is arguably the most favored martial arts to practice, perhaps it is the challenge of ultimate discipline and difficulty that lures so many people of all genders and ages to sign up.

If you are thinking of starting your own jiu-jitsu journey, you may first want to figure out exactly how much the classes will cost you.

Throughout this article, we will go through everything that you should be expected to spend to learn the craft.

It is also important to remember that learning jiu-jitsu is no easy feat, and it is likely that you will be learning for many, many years.

In fact, it can take up to ten years to achieve your black belt, so it’s important to factor this in when you are calculating the costs of beginning the activity.

Average Price Of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes Per Month

On average, it’s likely that you’ll be spending around $100-$200 a month on classes. My advice for anyone interested in starting these classes would be to check out the classes at your local gym.

This way you’ll usually have a few different options to choose from.

You’ll find there are gyms that practice BJJ exclusively, while there are others that teach several martial arts where BJJ is one of several martial arts taught, you can also find gyms that focus more on strength training but also offer BJJ as an activity.

Each of these gyms has its own set of perks and disadvantages and really it can just come down to personal preference, or which gyms are in your area.

No matter which gym you decide on, the average price of lessons should be around $100 – $200 for the month.

Anywhere offering classes below a hundred dollars a month are likely to be ineffective and anything over two hundred dollars is overcharging.

However, there are exceptions to this, for example, if your gym offers sessions with world-class trainers or instructors, this may drive up the price of these sessions.

Average Price Of Jiu-Jitsu Combined With Other Martial Arts

It’s not uncommon for gyms and schools to offer Jiu-Jitsu with other martial arts classes such as kickboxing or boxing. As a rule, it will cost more money to do this, and considering you’re learning an extra skill, it’s not all that surprising.

It is also not all that much more expensive. A gym that is selling Jiu-Jitsu classes for $100 a month may add on boxing sessions for an extra $50 a month.

Typically, the most popular combinations are BJJ with either strength and conditioning classes or BJJ and kickboxing.

You want to try and avoid paying more than $250 for the two classes as you’ll certainly be creeping into the overpriced range.

Average Price By City/State

As is often the case with many things, the price you’ll pay for your class will depend on where you live.

Classes taking place in cities or states where the cost of living is generally quite expensive will be higher in price than if you take the class in a fairly inexpensive area.

This will be due to the rent or income that they need to keep the gym running; it is a business after all.

Higher Prices – $150 To $250

  • New York

  • San Francisco

  • Boston

Medium Prices – $100 To $200

  • Seattle

  • Orlando

Lower Prices – $80 To $150

  • Charlotte

  • Denver

Average Price Of BJJ Accessories

It is also important to remember that there are more expenses than just gym classes. In fact, this is usually just the beginning of your expenses.

Some real Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts can even end up spending upwards of $1000 on accessories, new gear, and tournament fees.

The main costs are likely to come from the clothes you need to purchase:

Cost Of Gi

Your Gi may also be called a kimono, and most of the time this is what you’ll wear while practicing BJJ. New starters can often start out by renting Gi while they are finding their feet, but eventually, you’ll need to purchase your own.

Starter Gi’s will range from about $40 – $75.

Now, these will just about do the job for beginners, they’re heavier and are made with poorer materials than the high-end Gi’s but are great options for those who aren’t 100% sure if they’re committed to the sport yet.

If you do become passionate and dedicated to the sport, then you’ll probably want to upgrade to one of the better-made Gi’s but these can range between $180 to $250.

Average Cost Of A Rash Guard

If you wish to participate in Nogi Jiu-Jitsu then you’ll want to purchase a rash guard. You can use regular working-out clothes for a little while, but it is definitely in your best interest to purchase a rash guard.

This is because the friction caused by rolling on the mats combined with your opponents often grabbing you may cause your clothes to end up getting ripped and frayed.

BJJ rash guards are specifically designed to keep you comfortable while you’re rolling on the mat. This is done by cooling technology and a certain amount of flexibility in the guard.

Depending on the quality of your rash guard you can pay anywhere between $10 to $60.

Final Thoughts

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a highly rewarding skill to learn and is a great way to get yourself into shape. However, before you start this martial art, you should really take the time to decide whether it is something you will be passionate about.

This is because this form of martial art takes a lot of patience and dedication, and is by no means the cheapest hobby out there.

If you are certain that you want to take up the sport but are a little short for cash, try making smart shopping decisions.

Check the different gyms available and go for the cheapest option, also pick cheaper clothing options, to begin with. These can always be upgraded later on.
