Can I Practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Alone?

There are a lot of different martial arts and combat sports out there that people love watching and learning about.

However, one of the main ones that people enquire about and talk about is Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu.

If you’ve ever watched MMA or UFC, then it’s likely that you’ve seen fighters who specialize in this field. For this reason, a lot of people watch and want to try it for themselves.

However, lessons can be quite expensive and you might not have the luxury of having Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu lessons near you.

At the end of the day, you can’t learn this amazing combat sport without taking lessons, right? Or, can you?

There are many people that wonder if they can learn Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu on their own.

Follow our guide to find out if you can learn Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu alone, whether it’s from scratch or in-between lessons.

This way, you can see if this martial art is for you.

What Is Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu?

One of the most popular martial art forms in the world, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu can be seen in a lot of different sports such as MMA and UFC.

However, many people might not know what it actually is.

Well, Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu is predominantly a ground-based sport, involving a lot of grappling, which means that the people involved must learn about leverage and angles.

A lot of this comes from practicing with other people and understanding the importance of pressure points and the timing of your counters and attacks.

You will also have to focus on your technique, your form, and different holds and positions.

Because of this, we can understand why a lot of people would be skeptical about learning this sport alone.

The aim of this martial art is to get your opponent to the floor and rule out the features like size and strength.

There are lots of different holds and submissions that can be used against your opponent to gain the upper hand.

Several joint locks and chokeholds are utilized to make sure that you can disable your opponent and win the contest. If you like grappling, then this sport is for you!

Can You Teach Yourself Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu?

First of all, we should look at whether you can learn this from scratch in the comfort of your own home.

If you’re lucky enough to have a large backyard or area to work out in, then you might consider learning something like Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu at your own place.

However, there are limitations that are present when learning from scratch on your own.

First of all, you don’t have the same sort of guidance or help that you’d have if you were to attend actual lessons.

We all know that there can be some sort of anxiety about attending classes with strangers, especially with a sport with such close contact.

However, you need to make sure that you have a teacher or mentor.

One of the main things about learning a new martial art is that you need some sort of guidance and an acceptance to listen and learn.

If you practice this sport at home, then you’re going to lack a push in the right direction. A big thing is that you need to have good form, technique, and movement.

If you’re doing the wrong thing, then you won’t even know it. For this reason, we know that you will find it harder to learn from scratch alone.

Can I Practice Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu Alone?

If you have a bit of experience in this martial art, then learning alone might not be as hard as learning from scratch.

Of course, you will always have different online videos and guides that can help point you in the right direction, but it always helps to have some sort of techniques and moves in your arsenal.

However, one major thing about Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu is that you need to have a sparring partner, where you both can practice your moves and ensure that you’re both making the right moves at the right time.

After all, we all want to get better, so it helps to help each other out and give each other advice when practicing.

Of course, you can use a grappling dummy to practice your technique and movement but it isn’t the same as practicing your game on a moving, living person.

There are a lot of solo drills you can practice involving your hips and bridges, however, it isn’t the same as adapting to different positions against someone who is also adapting and moving into different positions.

Solo Drills

These are great for a lot of different reasons. They are perfect for improving your coordination and movement, whilst also conditioning your body to withstand long periods of time grappling on the floor.

This will improve your stamina and endurance, as well as strengthen your weaker muscles.

The best way to get better at something is to practice and consistently work on the areas that you need to improve.

By using a grappling dummy, you can highlight the weaker points of your game and the movements and techniques.

You will also develop a better awareness of sparring, whilst realizing your ability level.

So, although you might not be sparring with an actual person, you get a good sense of the different movements and techniques that you will need to be using when sparring with someone else.

Conclusion

There you have it. It’s definitely possible to practice Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu at home, you just need to make sure you have some sort of grappling dummy and some online videos for help.

At the end of the day, if you try hard enough, then you can do almost anything!

Practicing Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu alone is a good way to improve your game and can be a great way to train between sessions.

However, it will be significantly different than grappling with someone else, with them making you adapt to every move you make.

You just need to make sure that you have the patience and the initiative to practice consistently on your own.
