Buyers’ Guide

There are a few things that are worth considering when buying a new BJJ belt.  In this buyers’ guide, we will discuss some of the main things that you should look out for.

Belt Characteristics

Technically speaking, there are  few characteristics that should determine the type of BJJ belt you choose to buy. Let’s look at some of these characteristics.

Size

The size of your BJJ belt is the first thing that you should consider when selecting a new BJJ belt to buy.

The size of the belt you should buy usually corresponds to the size of the Gi that you wear.  For example, if you wear an A4 Gi, then you should buy an A4 sized BJJ belt.  Be aware, though, that BJJ belt sizes may differ depending on the brand.

Once you find a brand of belt that fits you, it’s a good idea to stick to that brand as you will know exactly what size it is.

Color

Although most BJJ belts are available in the whole range of colors in the BJJ belt ranking system, they also differ by brand.  A blue belt from one brand may look very different from a blue belt from another brand.

Additionally, some brand’s blue belts may look very similar to other brand’s purple belts.  To avoid confusion, it’s a good idea to consider a brand with a color that is easy to differentiate from another.

Thickness

The thickness of BJJ belts is another characteristic that differs depending on the brand.  Sanabul and Venum belts, for instance, are thicker than most other belts.

You may find that these thicker belts are harder to tie securely.  If you want a belt that you can tie in a very tight knot, you may want to choose a thinner belt that is also narrower.

How Long Does It Take To Achieve A Black Belt In Bjj?

In BJJ, it typically takes a person around 10 years of consistent and dedicated training to achieve the black belt.  This, of course, does depend on a variety of factors, including physical fitness and age, in addition to natural talent.

The fastest anyone has ever achieved a black belt in BJJ is 18 months, which was achieved by Travis Stevens.  Stevens was, however, already a black belt in judo, and he was an Olympic athlete.
